Introduction to Department

Sociology is a social science that systemizes and theorizes various phenomena, signs or experiences by comparing, analyzing and observing them. Especially, it aims to cultivate active ways of thinking to understand and solve social problems by learning about the characteristics and causes of regular and repetitive human thoughts and behavior types. It also aims to develop human resources equipped with balanced perspectives and historical awareness pertaining to social structure and change

Sociology has become systemic and fully fledged only recently but the scope is truly wide. Especially, it is closely related to psychology, anthropology and history and requires integrated and whole insights and perspectives.

Department of Sociology, College of Humanities, since its establishment in 1980, has provided education and research in typical sociological areas that correspond to the needs of contemporary society, such as classical sociological theories, contemporary sociological theories, theories of social problems, theories of social inequality, political sociology, sociology of religion, social statistics and social research methodologies.

In addition, subjects related to social welfare are being established as a way to explore practical sociology, promoting lectures in the areas of overview of social welfare studies, social policy theories, welfare state theories and senior welfare theories.

Graduates from Department of Sociology are employed by companies, journalistic sources and public research agencies. They also enter graduate schools to deepen their sociological knowledge.

Tips on Department

Sociology stems from our concern about and interest in humans and society. While it is a pure science to provide the background for social sciences, it is also a practice-bound science that presents the direction in our life. Sociology as a study to explore the interactions between human behaviors and social structure and those between social order and social change provides the basic knowledge in the areas of social sciences. Applied to various areas widely, it improves quality of life and contributes to social development.

Sociology has become systemic and full-fledged only recently as a study to develop pioneering ways of thinking and sharp criticism with an aim to secure overall insight and perspective on social phenomena but the scope is truly wide. About 1,200 graduated from Department of Sociology, College of Humanities, since its establishment in 1980. It has provided education and research in typical sociological areas that correspond to the needs of contemporary society, such as classical sociological theories, contemporary sociological theories, theories of social problems, theories of social inequality, political sociology, sociology of religion, social statistics and social research methodologies. Also, the department works hard to develop social researchers and analysts by providing subjects such as social statistics, social research methodologies and social research practice.

  1. 01Are their extracurricular activities?
    About 20% of students of Department of Sociology benefit from scholarship programs so that they can be dedicated to their studies. Students engage in academic publication producing paper collections every year, “Garakyibadi” (folk song group), Engagement (basketball group) and MENSA (sociological studies).

    Graduates from Department of Sociology are working for companies, journalistic sources and public research agencies. Some of them may enter prominent domestic or overseas graduate schools and work hard to deepen their sociological understanding and research.
