Department of Archaeology and Art History provides research and education in two areas of archaeology and art history. Archaeology is a study on ancient human culture and its traces. It covers research and investigation into the past traces of human beings through historic remains or relics and is in complementary relationships with history. Department of Archaeology and Art History covers research and education in the two areas of archaeology and art history. The common primary research subject of these two areas is the past relics and they have become sophisticated through interactions in the process of their development into contemporary studies.
First of all, archaeology is a study on the culture of ancient human race and their traces. It covers research and investigation into how humans survived in the past based on relics or historic remains. Not only artificial but also all natural traces are the research subject of archaeology. Also, it aims to identify the cultural change processes by excavating, studying and restoring the past relics and historic remains. From this perspective, it is in complementary relationships with cultural anthropology delving into general cultural affairs and history that aims to explore the past based on general literature sources.
On the other hand, art history studies 「History of Art」 and 「History through Art」 with an aim to understand human beings. It explores historic system of art with a focus on spiritual history of human artistic activities and formal analysis of works of art and looks into the characteristics of each time, covering the areas of Korean, Oriental and Occidental paintings, sculpture, handicraft and architecture. For effective studies, basically, understanding of 「Humans and Cultures」 and 「Humans and Art」 is required. It is also closely related to history, aesthetics or art theories.
Department of Archaeology and Art History of College of Humanities was established in 1988. Since its inception, it has developed human resources to lead the studies of Korean art history with a focus on basic research methodologies of archaeology and art history, wider basic knowledge and practice-purported training. Department of Archaeology and Art History also provides diverse academic activities such as regular spring and autumn field trips, regular invitation-based academic lectures and onsite archaeological training in Fukuoka during summer vacations.
