Introduction to Department
Established in 1998, the department is attended by famous students who are already famous in the literary world and others whose literature works have been recognized in various areas. Additionally, many students actively engage in creative work, criticism and debate through small groups. Students of excellent techniques and talents are screened mostly through 'creative writing' and 'interview'. The department was categorized under the humanities in 2007. The department focuses on creation and criticism of literature and art and cultivates writers such as poets, novelists and dramatists and aims to develop human resources in the contemporary areas such as image media, journalism, edition, advertisement and promotion.
While the existing Department of Creative Writing and Media Studies focused on practice to develop and train talented writers, the current department will be assisted by adjacent departments with theories and lectures on Oriental and Occidental literature theories and creative writing techniques because of the department's interdisciplinary and integrative characteristics. It is also to develop the department specializing both in theory and practice of creative writing and criticism covering all areas of languages, philosophy, history, aesthetics and sociology in terms of literature and art. Especially, poets, writers, critics and professors who are active in the current literature areas will provide various practice-based services and seminars.
Department of Creative Writing and Media Studies dwells where literature as creative art, literature as academic area and literature study as academic area are organically intertwined and complementarily applied. Perspectives and aptitudes will be developed in a way to enable actual observation and analysis based on appropriate creation education through which literary creativeness and nostalgic capacity will improve. This is achieved through basic and universal training that will contribute to a new unfolding of Korean literature.
Various literary persons who are currently active are invited for students to benefit from their lectures so that they can approach more realistic and substantial academic issues through creative writing, seminar-based criticism and debate. Also, they will be able to write better as they understand society and culture and recognize interrelationship with literature.
