Introduction to Department

Water, as an engineering subject, is very special. Water will be supplied until the last day of history recorded and this is the future of Department of Environmental Engineering. Department of Environmental Engineering of Sejong Campus has been characterized specifically to solve the problems of water environment in the water cycle by applying engineering methods. Education, experiment, practice and academic research are conducted in the following areas: environmental water resource researching water in the form of water resource, advanced water treatment turning water to drinking water, advanced wastewater treatment treating used water, treatment and disposal of wastes and sludge generated in the process and practical solution in the enormous water cycle covering soil and underground water pollution. All of these activities are aimed at finding out practical solutions to conserve the environment.

As the properties of contaminants become more diverse, our environment is threatened not only by the typical contaminants but also by toxic and hazardous substances and endocrine disrupters. Also, recycling and reuse of resources are the core technological requirement in Environmental Engineering. In recent times, the demand for energy-efficient, compact and hybrid technology is rapidly increasing, changing the direction of education and research. Hence, Environmental Systems engineering is rapidly evolving as a complex convergence technology covering IT and BT and the department concentrates on development of high-class human resources and researchers.

Major education and research areas of Department of Environmental Engineering include conservation and development of water resources, advanced treatment of wastewater, research into methods of disposal of byproducts (sludge) arising from water treatment, advanced treatment for drinking water and soil and underground water conservation. In the process, various related basic sciences will be required. Graduates from Department of Environmental Engineering work as engineers for large construction firms or environment-related professional consulting firms or environment-related public officials. They also work with public corporations and research agencies. Many graduates of undergraduate courses further their studies at graduate schools providing master's or doctoral courses.

  1. 01What aptitudes are appropriate to enter the department?
    Environmental engineering aims to exert various engineering efforts to conserve natural environment and prevent contamination. Hence, it is desirable for students of environmental engineering to have affection for environmental conservation and maintenance. Also, environmental engineering is a comprehensive engineering study and practice-based with a focus on field applications. This means that students of environmental engineering, if they enjoy acquiring and using knowledge of various areas and are active, may produce strong results.
  2. 02What are the characteristics of this department?
    Environmental engineering aims to improve human life and pertains to ET among IT, BT and ET (Environmental Technology) promoted by the state in the 21st century for technological development. This is where more demand will arise in the future. Especially, Department of Environmental Engineering of Korea University specializes in water treatment and is strong in that it is taught by the faculty highly recognized in their research and social activities.
  3. 03What will we study in this department?
    At Department of Environmental Engineering, knowledge in physics, chemistry, biology, hydrography and hydrology is beneficial as basically needed subjects while majors include waterworks engineering, sewerage engineering, industrial wastewater treatment engineering, wastes treatment engineering, air pollution and water quality control.

    Groups established by department members are leading many activities.
  5. 05What are the career paths after graduation?
    Graduates from Department of Environmental Engineering are employed as public officials at the Ministry of Environment, municipal and provincial offices, various public corporations such as the Korea Water Resources Corporation and research agencies such as the National Environmental Protection Institute. Also, they set up environment-related venture companies or are called by environment divisions of various companies. Additionally, they may work for NGOs dedicated to environmental protection. In the future, it is expected that environmental industry will expand to cover manufacturers of equipment for prevention of environmental contamination and processing, engineering technology providers and consulting companies. In the end, graduates may take part in environmental construction in China and Southeast Asia.
