<15th English Speech Contest and the 16th Foreigner Korean Speech Contest Held>

On December 3, the 15th English Speech Contest and the 16th Foreigner Korean Speech Contest were held in Nong Shim Hall of Korea University Sejong Campus. The event, conducted by the Sejong Institute of International Affairs and Education, was held to help the International Town at Sejong (ITS) program students and foreign exchange students learn each other’s cultures and encourage active interaction between them through their speeches. The judges of the two contests were Jo Yoonjae, director of the Sejong Institute of International Affairs and Education, David, a professor from the Institute for General Education, and Professor Han Sujeong, head of the Korean program.

The event started with an opening speech by Director Jo, and then the event was conducted in two parts, with part 1 covering the English speech contest for Korean students, and part 2 covering the Korean speech contest for foreign exchange students. In part 1, five Korean students presented on various topics such as their experience in the ITS program, Korean winter street food, and climate change. The Korean speech contest for foreign students in the second part followed with six foreign exchange students presenting on Kimchi, K-pop, and cultural differences in Korea, all the while showing off their ability to speak Korean.

The awards ceremony for the first and second half was done in a lottery format after all the presentations were finished. In the English speech contest, Jang Yeonguen, a student from the Department of Archaeology and Art History, received the Grand Prize, Gwon Yeonghyeon, a student from the School of Public Administration, and Lim Hyeonwon, a student from the Division of Chinese Studies, received First Prizes, and Kang Hana, a student from the Department of Environmental Systems Engineering, received the Prize for Excellence. In the Korean speech contest for foreigners, Luke Gerkman, a student from Eastern Michigan University, received the Grand Prize, Lucy Atsbury, a student from Bangor University, won the First Prize, and Justin Marsack, a student from Eastern Michigan University, took home the Prize for Excellence.
