Korea University Sejong Campus Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics Conducts High School-University Joint Education Program Activities
From August 5 to 8, Korea University Sejong Campus Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics held a summer session of the High School-University Joint Education Program at the Research and Business Cooperation Building. This program was planned in collaboration with the Sejong City Office of Education as a follow-up measure by the Regional Contribution Committee to strengthen local community cooperation activities in connection with local governments.
Dr. Min Giha, Instructor Lee Taeha, and three teaching assistants, Kim Kyunghee, Kim Donghyun, and Seo Youngjun, participated in the program, assisting 20 high school students with their experiments.
The main content of the program included lectures and experiments on the biomaterialization of bio-medical materials using biological/biomaterials. High school students had the opportunity to engage in self-directed inquiry activities by experiencing materials applicable to the field of biomaterial engineering, conducting experiments on bead formation using alginate, paper-based analytical devices (sensors), and adsorption using biosilica diatomaceous earth. On August 5 and 6, they conducted experiments on the adsorption of colorimetric nanoparticles and glucose detection performance. On August 7 and 8, they carried out experiments on alginate bead formation and indicator adsorption.
Through this event, high school students were able to experience university-level bioinformatics experiments and research, gaining career-oriented educational opportunities. The program also secured educational diversity by utilizing the human and material resources of the local university. Furthermore, by using the undergraduate laboratory and equipment of the Korea University Sejong Campus Department of Biotechnology & Bioinformatics, the students were provided with a more professional and in-depth learning experience.
