<Accelerator Research Center Successfully Localizes Beam Diagnostics Device for Superconducting Electron Linear Accelerators>


Korea University Sejong Campus Accelerator Research Center (CEO: Professor Kim Eunsan) has succeeded in localizing beam diagnostic devices for superconducting electronic linear accelerators through cooperative development between industrial and academic accelerators. The Accelerator Research Center has been taking the lead in device design and beam trajectory measurement and analysis by developing electronic circuitry and beam track control software for beam position monitor devices.

 

The Accelerator Research Center has developed an electronic circuit device with superior beam position resolution below Micron, making an international contribution to the development of beam position monitors for superconducting linear accelerators, including global collision linear accelerators. Beam Diagnostic Systems and Beam Control technology, which are essential for all particle accelerators, have laid the foundation for the international accelerator business and lead to an increase in import shipments in the domestic accelerator market. This is another achievement of industry-academia cooperation after localization of collision type electron accelerators and beam accelerator and position devices. Said a representative from Korea University, "In the future, cooperation in industrial and academic technologies and international human resource exchanges will become more active."

 

Kim Eunsan, a head of the Accelerator Research Center, added that, "Korea University Sejong Campus is developing into a leading university in the field of science belt accelerators by forming a reliable industry-academia cooperation system with 12 major acceleration companies in Korea."

 

Korea University Sejong Campus signed an MOU with KEK in Japan in 2017 to cooperate in research and the development of human resources in the field of superconducting accelerators. The beam diagnostics system developed in this study is installed and operated in KEK Japans (High Energy Accelerator Research Organization) accelerator.

 

Korea University Sejong Campus set up its first general graduate course in the Department of Accelerator Science in Korea in 2014 and is actively promoting the development and research of accelerators in connection with domestic and foreign accelerator laboratories, as well as the development and research of advanced professionals in beam utilization. In addition, Korea University Sejong Campus is expected to play a major role in strengthening international cooperative research on superconducting accelerators by hosting the Asia Accelerator Superconductor School, an international event of the Asian Committee for Future Accelerators (ACFA) in February 2020.
